In theaters everywhere Christmas Day....
Fences: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis give powerful performances in this film based on Pulitzer Prize-winner August Wilson’s drama. Washington also directs this tale of a flawed man and his troubled relationship with his family shadowed by his own personal disappointments, frailties, and social change. At times it does have the feel of watching a stage play on the big screen, but the acting alone makes this one of the best dramas of 2017. 4 1/2 stars.
La La Land: THE movie to see Christmas Day is La La Land. It truly is a 21st-century update of the musical that not only hits the right notes but has a screen pairing of Emma Stone and Ryan Goslin that audiences will adore. Simply put it is a contemporary Hollywood love story about 2 artists trying to make their way in the business. Yet it ends in a way that should make Hollywood proud. You'll know what I mean when you see it - which you should. The Phoenix Film Critics Society named it the best picture of 2016. 5 stars.
Already in theaters...
Passengers: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt play cute in this sci-fi romance. They’re on a spaceship that’s heading to colonize a planet that takes more than century to reach. So, it’s a bit of a problem when they wake up from their pods a little early. Though the romance is interesting, this film doesn’t engage enough with a storyline about problems plaguing their journey which will keep you on the edge of your seat. 3 out of 5
Catch Up With…
Manchester By The Sea: Casey Affleck gives what is probably the best actor performance of the year in this Kenneth Lonergan film. Affleck effectively plays a man wearing a mantle of grief after his beloved brother dies and he’s left to raise his nephew. This is a role he does not want to take on. While the film is shrouded in sadness, Lonergan effectively having characters that at times break your heart and make you laugh. Note: the language in this film is NOT for the faint of heart. 4 stars
Moana: One thing you have to credit Disney for and that’s not shying away from female leads. In Moana, the titular character is set to become the chief of her clan. However, she set to inherit an island that has some ecological troubles that can only be resolved with her taking a forbidden adventure. Throw in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical stylings and The Rock as demigod Maui and you’ve got one fun adventure. No need to take kids as cover for this film. Just go and enjoy it.
