Avengers: Infinity War: B

To sum up the plot (spoiler free!) in Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Infinity War" one need look no further than the proverb "...when the wicked rule, the people groan" Proverbs 29:2. We have seen Thanos is some of Marvel's other 18 films. We know he's a powerful entity estranged from his daughters. We already know Thor is not a big fan as the film starts right where "Thor: Ragnorak" left off. The problem with Thanos (Josh Brolin) is he's wicked, yet sees his cause as just. He desires to dominate and destroy in genocidal fashion while attempting to create what he sees as a necessary balance, order and peace. His efforts to collect Infinity Stones to gain the upper hand (literally), on all life forms is groan-inducing to the sizable collection of superheroes, who must do battle with him on multiple fronts across the universe. For the unseasoned, this is the ultimate goal for us fangirls and boys — to have all of your favorite supes in one big movie. It's easy to overlook the real talent that Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Chadwick Boseman exude on screen as buildings, stars (the celestial kind) and spaceships get knocked around with constancy. Make no mistake, it's even more watchable than just the special effects.

The effort to defeat Thanos stretches from Wakanda on Earth to planetoids and beyond, as many of our heroes are paired off and cast across the stars. It's Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Spiderman, and Star-Lord on one dead planet. Thor and Rocket join up as Black Panther plays host to Captain America and Hulk (who could really use a big green pill).
Running at nearly 2.5 hours, it's easy to think this film would be overstuffed and hard to follow. However, it moves briskly along without much to confuse a first-time Marvel watcher. Leaving the film, it took a day to or two realize that what left this viewer blue was the ending. Why? Because it ended as it should. Not as what one would usually expect in typical Hollywood fashion. For the emotionally invested, that decision will have meaning — and that's what made it good.

Gayle On Film: 'A Private War'

There is a refrain in the song "History Has Its Eyes on You" that repeats in the musical Hamilton — "Who lives. Who dies. Who tells your story?"For many stories of the unnamed hundreds of thousands who died as a result of the wars in Sri Lanka, Libya, Syria and other war-torn countries around the globe, their biographer was foreign correspondent Marie Colvin (played admirably by Rosamund Pike). The film details how the real-life journalist was willing to put herself in harms way to tell those stories, and she did not go unscathed personally or physically. She lost her eye while covering hostilities in Sri Lanka. She dodged bullets and bombs, but she was willing to go where no others did. This earned her a one-on-one interview with Muammar Gaddafi during the Arab Spring uprising because he liked her. Gaddafi claimed he liked her even more than former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who was a strong woman with "African blood" in her veins. The film is brutal, very graphic and earns every inch of its R rating, but "A Private War" is a solid film worthy of the full price of a ticket. View Now
Gayle On Film — 'Avengers: Endgame'

Gayle On Film — 'Avengers: Endgame'

Avengers: Endgame It's good. It's funny. It's a thoroughly satisfying final installment of "The Avengers" franchise that Joe and Anthony Russo have put together with "Avengers: Endgame." The great challenge here, though, is explaining why... Without the spoilers. And this will be spoiler-free, provided you've already seen "Avengers: Infinity War" (or the extra post-credits scene in "Captain Marvel"). Endgame picks up right where they left off — with Ironman, Thor, Captain America and War Machine surviving the mass extinction caused by the titan Thanos and his gaudy, giant golden gauntlet. As one would expect, some of our heroes have handled it better than others. With Black Widow trying to hold the team together, the effect on Thor draws the most audience reaction (laughs). But explaining the basic plot how they want to re-save the world (as usual) would be a tell. Even our heroes have some well-written wink-and-a-nod fun with the implausibility of it. Yet, it works. Though lengthy at three hours long, most storylines are resolved. Now, some die-hard sci-fi fans might have an issue with how their solution might work in the real world. We must remember this is sci-fi fantasy. And as such, it's a fine film indeed. View Now

Gayle on Film: 'Kubo and the Two Strings,' 'Captain America: Civil War'

Kubo and the Two Strings: A poor little boy makes a living telling stories. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s accidentally summoned a spirit. And that spirit has a vendetta. Throw in some talking animals, great animation and you’ve got what loos like an epic adventure. And in case you haven’t seen it yet… Captain America: Civil War: I’ve got to wonder, in the mythical Marvel world, what the budget is to rebuild all these cities after aliens, gods, sentient beings and/or beings of artificial intelligence attack. In the newest trailer for “Captain America: Civil War” Tony Stark & Steve Rogers are at odds. I refuse to take sides. I love them both. But I REALLY love the appearance of the kid who was bit by a radio-active spider at the end.
