The Fate Of The Furious: ★★

The quick review: If you liked the previous seven in the series, you'll probably like this one.

Now, the little bit longer review. If spectacular action sequences which don't have to be believable, just enjoyable are your thing. Then there's something to like in this film. Moreover, if you're a fan of Academy Award winners Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron or the stalwart Kurt Russell. There's something there for you too. However, they along with Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood aren't given much to do except repeat some half-funny one-liners and walk away beautifully from car chases, even if they roll over a few times.
The film opens with Diesel on his honeymoon with Rodriguez in Cuba, settling a beef with a car chase. But shortly thereafter he's getting an offer from a super cyber villain (Theron) that's a little too tough to pass up. Next, he's going rogue and the rest of the team wrestles with stopping him, but hopefully not permanently.
If you can get over the concept that a bunch of car thieves is the only thing between you and nuclear annihilation, you may find this entertaining. However, someone racing a supercar over ice to beat a nuclear sub was a bridge jump too far for this critic.

Gayle on Film: 'Monster Truck' & 'The Fast & The Furious' Anniversary

If they can make a decent movie called "Cowboys vs. Aliens" then surely there's room in the multiplex for Monster Trucks. I mean, you've got a kid building his first set of wheels and what appears to be a gas guzzler without the 4-year monthly payments (the alien). Sure, the line about getting him back to his family may have been heard before. But this looks like a nice outing for the family come 2017 when it's released. And since we have a car theme going here, let's kick in some high octane action with The Fast & The Furious re-release to celebrate it's 15th anniversary. I have to admit, I thought it would get a sequel or two. The fact that they're on to number seven is a big surprise. Gayle On Film: 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw'

Gayle On Film: 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw'

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw When Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) met on screen in Fast and Furious 7, their smart talk got them their own stand-alone movie in this gearbox franchise. This time US lawman Hobbs and former military operative Shaw are paired up, reluctantly, to go after Brixton Lore (Idris Elba). Now, Lore was dispatched by Shaw with a bullet to the brain, but his resurrection is at the crux of this movie. He's working for a company that has the ability to bring humans back from the brink with a little hardware (sound familiar?) and AI upgrades. They want to make humans stronger, better and, oh...they want to get their hands on a deadly pathogen. This causes a damsel to be in distress because - though she's tough as nails and can fight her own battles - this isn't a movie about her. It's a movie about stunts, fisticuffs, and high octane extreme stunts. The problem though is the film seems overly formulaic and overly produced. While Johnson and Statham are natural opposites with good "hostile" chemistry, some of the infighting is funny, and some of it and the storyline just seemed forced. Basically, it's a big-budget peacock party. Male peacocks are loud and noisy and preen with their colorful feathers. The film looks good, it has solid production value, especially those scenes set in Samoa (a nod to Johnson's heritage). Hobbs teases Shaw about "wearing a jacket" in a tropical paradise. He's a tourist that packed some of the wrong things, sort of like this movie. *Note, there are extra scenes, in the early and mid post-credits. View Now
Gayle On Film: 'The Dead Don't Die'

Gayle On Film: 'The Dead Don't Die'

The Dead Don't Die Jim Jarmusch has a sincerely talented cast to take on a zombie apocalypse. In small, sleepy Centerville the sheriff (a deliciously deadpan Bill Murray) and his two deputies don't really want to be bothered with having to take out zombies. A wonderfully quirky Adam Driver and nicely solemn Chloe Sevigny are deputies who care a bit more — only a bit. Add to the mix Tilda Swinton as a Scottish-born funeral director who, if anything, is more of an oddball than the zombies and steals every scene she's in. These actors are delightful to watch even if the story doesn't quite deliver on the promise. The zombies are slow and familiar to everyone in town, as the local graveyard is emptied and town residents are converted to the brain-dead-side. The citizens seem more interested in stopping them than the authorities do when the brains hit the fan. There are some genuine laughs, but not enough to carry the story all the way through to the end. View Now

Gayle On Film: 'The Secret Art of Self Defense'

The Secret Art of Self Defense A darkly humorous take on toxic masculinity, The Art of Self Defense is quirky and worth some of your time. Jesse Eisenberg is Casey Davies and he is THAT guy. The one who's the oddball at work, not always invited into conversations nor welcomed to the lunch table in the break room. After suffering a brutal attack, the mild-mannered accountant enrolls in a karate class with a master instructor who wants to toughen him and all the other students up in ways that go way beyond the teacher/student appropriateness line. He thinks Casey's name and dog are too feminine, but hey, at least he's not a girl! Sometimes comedically sharp and in some places overly ponderous, it's definitely something one can appreciate if they want to get their fight club on, 21st-century style. View Now
