The Lion King

"The Lion King" is the latest Disney animated hit to be turned into a live action-appearing movie. It appears to be live action, but these are photorealistic computer-generated characters. The 1994 version is in color, has humor, and catchy music. The aesthetic is quite different when you actually make the savannah look realistic and have animals singing their way through a quite beautiful African landscape (as this reviewer saw it in 2D IMAX).

It requires the acting talents of the cast to convey the emotion much better than realistic-looking lions that haven't been truly anthropomorphized by animators. But that being said, the reworking of the "Hamlet" tale still has the whimsy and heart to make you tap your toes and smile. Maybe not as much as the first one, but certainly enough to make you enjoy it. "The Lion King" features the voice talents of Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa.

The Boy Who Would Be King If you're looking for something adventurous for the whole family, then The Boy Who Would Be King is the family film you might be looking for. Written and directed by Joe Cornish, the Arthurian legend of Excalibur gets a quite likable 21st Century update. In the story, our hero is Alex (Louise Ashbourne Serkis) who stands up to two school bullies (a boy and a girl) and ends up running from them. In his escape through a construction site, he pulls Excalibur (the sword of kings) to defend himself. But that is not his only duty. Cornish goes political. When Merlin shows up in two forms, the older nicely played by Patrick Stewart, and the younger played by Angus Imrie, Alex gets his mission: stand up for yourself, always tell the truth, fight the political malaise of authoritarianism in the world and fight off Morgana, Arthur's half-sister who wants the power Excalibur can bring. That's a tall order for a kids movie. But it's just the kind of adventure kids dream about and it's worth the price of a movie ticket for the pint-sized crowd. Kudos to scene-stealer Imrie who delivers a clever punchline and a little gravitas along the way. I think the Merlin actor will make a name for himself in the future. View Now
Gayle On Film: 'Outlaw King'

Gayle On Film: 'Outlaw King'

Outlaw King Netflix is going heavy on the theatrical releases, and in "Outlaw King" it's Chris Pine doing the heavy lifting as Scotland's real-life hero Robert the Bruce. If you saw "Braveheart," this movie picks up where that one left off with the parts of that other Scottish hero, William Wallace, sent to be displayed around parts of Scotland as a reminder to the Scots that one should never ever attempt to fight the King of England, and it's a sign of more brutality, entrails and carnage to come. Bruce has to bend a knee to the king and is married off to a fine Englishwoman to seal the deal. Pine is perfectly fine as the sensitive Bruce who soon realizes that he likes this lady he is married to whom he's just met, but he's not fine with bending a knee for long. Then what you have is 50 men going up against the greatest army, and they're willing to burn their own castles down to make a point. The accuracy of the film may be debated by historians as they usually are with these films. Yet, it's an uneven contrast seeing so brutal a warrior (in ALL his glory) attempt to woo his lady. Even so, it's pretty entertaining if you like knights fighting for the land and freedom against all odds. (It's also now available on Netflix.) View Now

Gayle On Film: 'The Map of Tiny Perfect Things'

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things The Plot: Mark and Margaret are caught in a temporal anomaly that makes them repeat the same day over and over — much like "Groundhog Day." Why You Should Watch: While they give multiple winks, nods, and mentions of "Groundhog Day," this isn't that movie. Writer Lev Grossman gives a finely tuned teen dramedy capably handled by the delightful Kyle Allen as Mark. While helpful and full of teen angst and self-involvement, Kathryn Newton's Margaret brings some real seriousness to her role as co-protagonist. What could two teens get up to and destroy, only to rinse and repeat and do it all again the next day? Lots. But this is not just some teens gone wild story. This is not Mark's one-man show simply trying to figure out the life lesson the universe wants him to learn, beyond getting a girl. Director Ian Samuels effectively shows that there are things to learn from Margaret, who remains an enigma for much of the film. Predictable? Yes. But what it is and excels at is being a map of the tiny good things a good script that's not overly sweet can do. 3 out of 5 stars. View Now

Elephants In Trouble

Elephants In Trouble

This first elephant is in trouble because it's the one causing the trouble. It marched into a village in India and began ripping through the wall of a building. To retaliate, the residents threw firecrackers at the poor creature in an attempt to scare it off. Eventually, it wandered away. Over at Oldonyiro Community Conservancy in Kenya, three helpless elephants were trapped in mud and couldn't get out on their own. Rescuers hauled each elephant out of the mud with a tractor. After some time on solid ground, each elephant was able to recover and stand up on its own. View Now
