The Secret Art of Self Defense

A darkly humorous take on toxic masculinity, The Art of Self Defense is quirky and worth some of your time. Jesse Eisenberg is Casey Davies and he is THAT guy. The one who's the oddball at work, not always invited into conversations nor welcomed to the lunch table in the break room.

After suffering a brutal attack, the mild-mannered accountant enrolls in a karate class with a master instructor who wants to toughen him and all the other students up in ways that go way beyond the teacher/student appropriateness line. He thinks Casey's name and dog are too feminine, but hey, at least he's not a girl! Sometimes comedically sharp and in some places overly ponderous, it's definitely something one can appreciate if they want to get their fight club on, 21st-century style.

The Hummingbird Project Although "The Hummingbird Project" plays like a based-on-a-true-story thriller, it's fiction. Albeit, interesting fiction about high-stakes capitalism and high-frequency trading. Jessie Eisenberg gives a satisfyingly watchable performance as Vinnie. Vinnie is the salesman, the hustler of a project developed by his cousin Anton to move stock trading data milliseconds faster than anyone else. This could result in billions in profit. This project involves laying fiber optic cable in a straight line from Kansas to New Jersey. That means attempting to buy land piece by piece from various homeowners and the tech-resistant Amish, running afoul of their old boss (Salma Hayek), and coding problems. And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the mountain of problems they run into (including an actual mountain). Alex Skarsgärd gives a fine performance as a balding tech guy, who appears to need a caregiver more than his own kids. The pair races against time and trouble in an attempt to get the deal done. While the film is a little heavy on the coding issues and a deliberate plot device for Vinnie's story arc, it has the look and performances of a solidly passable thriller. View Now
Gayle On Film: 'The High Note'

Gayle On Film: 'The High Note'

The High Note First, it's fairly easy to say that "The High Note" hit a high note casting Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross (daughter of uber legend Diana Ross) as a personal assistant/wannabe music producer and an over 40 diva who's not quite ready to call it quits on her career. Johnson is Maggie Sherwood — superfan and super-faithful assistant to Grace Davis (Ross). Maggie performs the most menial tasks due to her admiration for Davis. So sincere is that admiration that she's lasted on the job (largely thankless) for several years (that's a long time in personal assistant years in Hollywood). But Grace is doing the same show, the same act when she's touring. Simply put, she's stalled. Record company execs want her to do that same act in a Las Vegas residency. Maggie believes Grace is not past her prime and should expect more for herself, and so she attempts to push Grace with her own musical ideas. What you get is a female-affirming, pleasant film. There is no backstabbing. (No, that's not a spoiler). While there are funny moments and some solid female-to-female dialogue, the conflict was predictable. Even so, the film is a nice way to spend some girl time co-watching via a Zoom meeting. "The High Note" premieres On Demand. View Now

Gayle On Film: 'The Fate of the Furious'

The Fate Of The Furious: ★★ The quick review: If you liked the previous seven in the series, you'll probably like this one. Now, the little bit longer review. If spectacular action sequences which don't have to be believable, just enjoyable are your thing. Then there's something to like in this film. Moreover, if you're a fan of Academy Award winners Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron or the stalwart Kurt Russell. There's something there for you too. However, they along with Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood aren't given much to do except repeat some half-funny one-liners and walk away beautifully from car chases, even if they roll over a few times. The film opens with Diesel on his honeymoon with Rodriguez in Cuba, settling a beef with a car chase. But soon after getting an offer from a super cyber villain (Theron) that's a little too tough to pass up. Soon he's going rogue and the rest of the team wrestles with stopping him, but hopefully not permanently. If you can get over the concept that a bunch of car thieves are the only thing between you and nuclear annihilation, you may find this entertaining. However, someone racing a supercar over ice to beat a nuclear sub was a bridge jump too far for this critic. View Now

Gayle on Film: Jason Bourne

Bourne Goes to Vegas, and the Odds Are Ever in His Favor Jason Bourne is a man of secrets. But he's also a man under the radar. Bourne happens to be using his skills in a paid fight club and if you're familiar with the franchise, you can figure how well he's doing at that. Meanwhile, one of his former cohorts is hacking the CIA mainframe and finds some information that Wikileaks, Edward Snowden and maybe now the Russians would love to get their hands on. That information is key to Bourne's past and he's lured into globe-hopping action that ends with an intense car chase on the Las Vega strip that by Vegas standards is quite the show. Now if this seems like familiar territory, it is. The re-teaming of Matt Damon as Bourne and Paul Greengrass as director delivers a summer action movie spectacle that will keep your attention but doesn't give you anything new. While it's not the strongest in the series, it's certainly entertaining and a nice way to spend a few summer hours. View Now
