The Secret Art of Self Defense

A darkly humorous take on toxic masculinity, The Art of Self Defense is quirky and worth some of your time. Jesse Eisenberg is Casey Davies and he is THAT guy. The one who's the oddball at work, not always invited into conversations nor welcomed to the lunch table in the break room.

After suffering a brutal attack, the mild-mannered accountant enrolls in a karate class with a master instructor who wants to toughen him and all the other students up in ways that go way beyond the teacher/student appropriateness line. He thinks Casey's name and dog are too feminine, but hey, at least he's not a girl! Sometimes comedically sharp and in some places overly ponderous, it's definitely something one can appreciate if they want to get their fight club on, 21st-century style.

The Green Knight This is the pick of the week. The 14th century medieval Arthurian legend is beautifully told with Dev Patel in the lead role as Gawain. While it might have given you fits if you weren't prepared for the pop quiz back in high school, the dreamlike imagery, acting, and set design make this quite a retelling. It should be noted, and this is not a spoiler, there are no sword fights. This is more cerebral, and that's not a bad thing. It falls more into the art film column than action/adventure. But it's definitely worth your time. View Now

Gayle On Film: 'The Hummingbird Project'

The Hummingbird Project Although "The Hummingbird Project" plays like a based-on-a-true-story thriller, it's fiction. Albeit, interesting fiction about high-stakes capitalism and high-frequency trading. Jessie Eisenberg gives a satisfyingly watchable performance as Vinnie. Vinnie is the salesman, the hustler of a project developed by his cousin Anton to move stock trading data milliseconds faster than anyone else. This could result in billions in profit. This project involves laying fiber optic cable in a straight line from Kansas to New Jersey. That means attempting to buy land piece by piece from various homeowners and the tech-resistant Amish, running afoul of their old boss (Salma Hayek), and coding problems. And that's just the tip of the iceberg of the mountain of problems they run into (including an actual mountain). Alex Skarsgärd gives a fine performance as a balding tech guy, who appears to need a caregiver more than his own kids. The pair races against time and trouble in an attempt to get the deal done. While the film is a little heavy on the coding issues and a deliberate plot device for Vinnie's story arc, it has the look and performances of a solidly passable thriller. View Now

Gayle On Film: 'Godzilla vs. Kong'

Godzilla vs. Kong King Kong is not a happy camper. You wouldn't be either if you were kept in a giant VR stadium. Godzilla? He's got a bad case of heartburn; so we find these two titans in pretty foul moods in "Godzilla vs. Kong." After an absence, Godzilla rises from the deep in an attempt to take out Apex Cybergenics. No, he's not an anti-capitalist. But humans die and it's a pretty big PR blow to his image. Maybe he's been listening to Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry), a conspiracy theory enthusiast and host of "Titan Truth Podcast." He realizes something hanky is about to go down with those two titans. Who's really listening to him? It's Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) and her fellow teen buddy Josh (ironically in a van reminiscent of the Mystery Machine). This comically unlikely trio thinks they know what's really going on with Godzilla and want to break into Apex— or what's left of it. And who wouldn't think they could? After all, this is a popcorn action movie where such things are plausible. We've come to expect this behavior from Madison as she has a prior relationship with the big lizard. I mean she's old enough to drive now, and she's at that age where she declares to her scientist father she really understands him! Meanwhile, these meddling teens and their friend are not too far off from the truth as scientists think a battle royale between the two behemoths is possible. And when the pair do engage, it's like two gigantic toddlers tossing around a game of Battleship. A friend of mine who's a fan of these titans says he doesn't like seeing his friends fight. But that's exactly what you're bound to get (as the title gives that away). Yes, Kong has a mean right hook (and a preteen who seems to be the only one who understands him as well). However, If you're a fan of either of the pair, mean right hooks, conspiracy theories, or fantasy adventures— this will be right up your alley. Don't go looking too deep for a believable plot; Godzilla goes fathoms below and he still can't find it. That being said, it's certainly a fun adventure. View Now

Gayle On Film: 'Wonder Woman 1984'

Wonder Woman 1984 Threats to all of humanity are the lifeblood of plots in action movies. This time, it's Wonder Woman's turn to save the planet's billions of humans. Instead of Nazis and criminal evil geniuses to fight, she's got to let her golden lasso help her deal with your basic con man Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), a woman who's finally able to get a little attention thanks to some powerful ancient objects. While Wonder Woman is a princess who gets a dream from a wish her heart makes (the return of the dishy Chris Pine), she soon realizes this dream is the thing of nightmares when the deepest, darkest wishes become reality. The hallmarks of a woman's touch are on this fun film, courtesy of director Patty Jenkins. The action sequences are sometimes playful, sometimes intense with a good number of kids Wonder Woman needs to save and the number of prurient body shots of female leads is low. It's not as dark as some other DC comic movie fare, but it's certainly a good addition to the pack. View Now
