Mattel Revives '80s Superhero Sun-Man — Creator Yla Eason Joins RTM 3:42
In 1985, Yla Eason's son told her that he could never be a superhero because of the color of his skin. The Harvard professor took her son’s words and turned them into a superpower with the creation of Sun-Man, a Black American hero whose magical melanin skin is powered by the sun. Sun-Man was the first mass-market Black superhero and now Eason is partnering with Mattel to reintroduce him to the world by uniting the Rulers of the Sun with Masters of the Universe.
The RTM hosts talked to the real hero of this story Yla Eason via Zoom to chat about the rerelease of her character and the importance for Black children and comic fans to see a superhero that looks like them.
