Of the top 1,000 highest grossing films of the last 10 years, only five were directed by women of color. In fact, about 5 percent of the top 250 directors working today are women. Made In Her Image aims to change that. The non-profit recently held three-day camps over the summer where girls learned how to create their own short films.
This is such an exciting program and, for young girls especially, this has the potential to open up doors for them that wouldn't have been open before. Our own Charity Bailey was even a mentor at one of the camps. The creator of the program, Shanice Malakai, took the time to speak to our RTM hosts via Skype, along with some of the girls.
