Split - ★★★ The irony here in the title is prescient in that it sums up how this review will go for the latest from director M. Night Shyamalan. On the one hand, Scottish actor James McAvoy’s tremendous talents are on display as he outstandingly plays a man with multiple personality disorder. Each of his personality portrayals are distinct and easily distinguishable from each other. They know each other and converse with each other but are split into two groups seeking to control his actions. Conversely, the bad personalities are plotted to do the typical movie thing: kidnap some pretty women in tight sweaters and short skirts and have them suffer uncomfortably. It’s an old trope, but it’s semi-effective thanks to McAvoy’s presence. And yes, there is a twist for true Shyamalan fans - as that’s often his trademark. But you’ll just have to see it to find out what it is.
