Avengers: Infinity War: B
To sum up the plot (spoiler free!) in Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Infinity War" one need look no further than the proverb "...when the wicked rule, the people groan" Proverbs 29:2. We have seen Thanos is some of Marvel's other 18 films. We know he's a powerful entity estranged from his daughters. We already know Thor is not a big fan as the film starts right where "Thor: Ragnorak" left off. The problem with Thanos (Josh Brolin) is he's wicked, yet sees his cause as just. He desires to dominate and destroy in genocidal fashion while attempting to create what he sees as necessary balance, order and peace. His efforts to collect Infinity Stones to gain the upper hand (literally), on all life forms is groan-inducing to the sizable collection of superheroes, who must do battle with him on multiple fronts across the universe. For the unseasoned, this is the ultimate goal for us fangirls and boys — to have all of your favorite supes in one big movie. It's easy to overlook the real talent that Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Chadwick Boseman exude on screen as buildings, stars (the celestial kind) and spaceships get knocked around with constancy. Make no mistake, it's even more watchable than just the special effects.
The effort to defeat Thanos stretches from Wakanda on Earth to planetoids and beyond, as many of our heroes are paired off and cast across the stars. It's Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Spiderman, and Star-Lord on one dead planet. Thor and Rocket join up as Black Panther plays host to Captain America and Hulk (who could really use a big green pill).
Running at nearly 2.5 hours, it's easy to think this film would be overstuffed and hard to follow. But it moves briskly along without much to confuse a first-time Marvel watcher. Leaving the film, it took a day to or two realize that what left this viewer blue was the ending. Why? Because it ended as it should. Not as what one would usually expect in typical Hollywood fashion. For the emotionally invested, that decision will have meaning — and that's what made it good. View Now
