When she first brought home a Santa statue, it startled her fiancé Brent when he came across it at night. This writer has often joked that no money in the budget should be spent on shirts for Jason Mamoa, our titular hero, but muscles and cascading sun-kissed locks aside, Mamoa is quite likable as the half human, half Atlantean who's the one person on the planet (on the surface or otherwise) who can save the world from his half-brother Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson). Although, the bad guy does have understandably serious beef with human polluting the oceans. Don't go looking for the seriousness of, say "Wonder Woman." If anyone could take on the role originally played by Julie Andrews, it's the uber talented Emily Blunt who sings, dances and cheekily makes her way through the sequel to the original. Now grown up, the children are in crisis, specifically Michael. The widower (played solidly by Ben Whishaw) with three children of his own is about to lose his house when Poppins once again shows up. Director Rob Marshall doesn't update much to be more relevant in this new century. He gives ample doses of the same old-fashioned nostalgia to great effect, even throwing in 2D animation.
