Gayle On Film: 'Instant Family'

Gayle On Film: 'Instant Family'

Instant Family This film is inspired by writer/director Sean Anders' real-life story of adopting children in the foster system. Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne play parents with the perfect house hoping to become decent parents to kids in the system. It will tug at the heartstrings, but be prepared to laugh at parenting 101 for the somewhat unprepared. It would be a great family movie for pre-teens too, but it's more foul-mouthed than expected. At it's core though, it's a sweet holiday film. View Now
Gayle On Film: 'Boy Erased'

Gayle On Film: 'Boy Erased'

Based on the memoir "Boy Erased: A Memoir" by Garrard Conley, the film delves into the now mostly shunned practice of gay conversion therapy. Lucas Hedges gives a heartbreaking performance as the son of a Baptist preacher who struggles with his sexual identity. A devastating assault, a lie and the desire to please his parents lands him in a program that seeks to create more "manly" men. It deftly details a juvenile bootcamp that some would consider a loving therapy program but that many others would consider cruel and unusual punishment. There's a lot of Aussie power in the film about an Arkansas family. Joel Edgerton directs and stars in the film along with Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. View Now

Gayle On Film: 'Widows'

Gayle On Film: 'Widows'

Oscar winning director Steve McQueen and writer Gillian Flynn certainly know how to entertain audiences with a different kind of storytelling. What makes "Widows" so watchable is the story and the players hired to deliver the drama and action. Viola Davis leads with precision as the wife of a big time thief (Liam Neeson). He and his buddies are caught in a robbery gone bad. To make it worse for their widows and girlfriends (Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki), the money was taken from a really bad guy played by Daniel Kaluuya (who's willing to put them all in a sunken place), and he sends the bill to the ladies. This movies engages on multiple levels of race, politics, graft, gentrification, class and privilege, and there are twists and turns (some telegraphed) as the ladies attempt a heist of their own to pay the money back, but it's definitely a solid ride when the dust settles. Gayle On Film: 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald'

Gayle On Film: 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald'

While this story exists in the Harry Potter universe, it would be a mistake to expect the same kind of story. The film opens with an intense and daring prison escape and settles into becoming what most second films in a trilogy are — lots of exposition becoming a link to the big denouement in the final film. Gone is the whimsy of our favorite magical creature lover, or as we mere muggles would say animal lover, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). The creature hunter is asked to skip his day job and hunt for someone — a little difficult as Newt has been forbidden to leave England for nearly destroying New York (see the first Newt film "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" for a full explanation of that). More importantly, Newt is asked to choose sides in a political battle. As this is decades before Voldemort is on the scene, the villain Grindelwald (a non-pirate version of Johnny Depp) is the one causing lots of mischiefs. Grindelwald is sneakier and more polished, but he's just as evil as "He Who Must Not Be Named." Now if all this is lost on you, you may be lost seeing this tale. Heavy are the doses of magical family lines and characters that will the uninitiated flummoxed. However, for diehards, it's just another film to bide your time until the next one rolls out. View Now
Gayle On Film: 'A Private War'

Gayle On Film: 'A Private War'

There is a refrain in the song "History Has Its Eyes on You" that repeats in the musical Hamilton — "Who lives. Who dies. Who tells your story?"For many stories of the unnamed hundreds of thousands who died as a result of the wars in Sri Lanka, Libya, Syria and other war-torn countries around the globe, their biographer was foreign correspondent Marie Colvin (played admirably by Rosamund Pike). The film details how the real-life journalist was willing to put herself in harms way to tell those stories, and she did not go unscathed personally or physically. She lost her eye while covering hostilities in Sri Lanka. She dodged bullets and bombs, but she was willing to go where no others did. This earned her a one-on-one interview with Muammar Gaddafi during the Arab Spring uprising because he liked her. Gaddafi claimed he liked her even more than former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who was a strong woman with "African blood" in her veins. The film is brutal, very graphic and earns every inch of its R rating, but "A Private War" is a solid film worthy of the full price of a ticket. View Now
