Early Man: B+
The prehistoric puns of "Early Man" are sure to please fans of Nick Park's "Wallace & Gromit" and "Shaun the Sheep." When a meteor comes crashing to the earth, an early man picks up the hot meteorite and from there, an accidental game of hot potato turns into a game of soccer. Some of the early men stick with the game through the eons. Those Bronze age modern folks revere it with Roman Coliseum-like veneration.
A small secluded tribe remains oblivious to the game and others. Secluded, that is, until "modern" man in a metal suit comes in what's probably the earliest case of imminent domain to get the land that has plenty of resources to enrich Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston). Dug (Eddie Redmayne), our young hero, makes his way to town to make a wager, his backwoods Neanderthals vs. the big city's star soccer players for rights to the resource-rich land. Since it's so modern, he gets the help of a girl (Maisie Williams) to get his rag tag team ready for the big time. Some of the jokes may go over the heads of kids and grown-ups who don't watch a lot of British TV or movies. Even so, it's a rock solid stop-motion delight for the whole family.
