Gayle on Film: 'Deepwater Horizon,' 'Masterminds,' & 'Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children'

Gayle on Film: 'Deepwater Horizon,' 'Masterminds,' & 'Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children'

Your best bet this week is "Deep Water Horizon." Based on the 2010 disaster which claimed the lives of 11 oil platform workers in the Gulf of Mexico. Director Peter Berg once again teams with actor Mark Wahlberg in an efficiently written and directed story of what lead up to the blowout and aftermath of the explosion. The oil spill became one of world's largest man-made disasters. Wahlberg seems to excel at playing at one of the good guys trying to stave off disaster and who along with others heroically acts to save the injured. Berg is able to give the audience a feel of the impending doom and the resulting disaster quite effectively in 97 minutes. Simply put, "Masterminds" is probably the silliest movie based on actual events. And there's quite a lot of that aforementioned "simple" about the character (David Ghantt) that Zach Galifianakis plays. He's the last guy who should be employed as an armored truck driver. He's engaged but has a major crush on his feather-haired co-worker Kristen Wiig. She gets involved with the wrong crowd and it doesn't take them long to convince Ghantt to steal $17 million. But when you have the dumb, leading the dumber - silliness abounds. It plays like a good episode of SNL (given the generous dose of current and former SNL castmembers in the cast) - some stuff is outright funny, some gags are a little flat. But overall, there are enough laughs to earn this movie a passing grade. Don't take your kids. This is definitely for grown-ups. A movie that is meant for the kids, but may scare the youngest amongst them is "Miss Peregrine's School Home for Peculiar Children." Expect for the beautiful, but dark images you've come to expect in a Tim Burton film, actress Eva Green stars in the titular role. The film is really about young Jake. After the death of his grandfather, Jake discovers that his elder was more than he imagined. Jake realizes that he has special abilities to see the fantastical in the world he never knew existed. But the wonder of this new world is short lived when he finds out that there are very real monsters that are threatening to destroy it. While it was fantastical, the storytelling was uneven and slightly too dark for the younger set. View Now
