The Guam Fire Department was called in to rescue a dog stuck in a deep quarry. As one firefighter descended into the quarry he disturbed a hornet's nest with his rope. In the nest were Greater Banded Hornets measuring between one and two inches long. At least three firefighters were stung and two were taken to a hospital.
What happened to the stranded dog? The fire department aborted the rescue mission because of a lack of protective gear. Thankfully, the next day a jogger and a few hikers found another route down the quarry and carried the dog out. The rescued dog was later reunited with his owners.
