Tyler Dayberry was skiing down the slopes when he spotted a tree up ahead, so he decided to jump it. Gayle On Film: 'Mary Queen Of Scots'

Gayle On Film: 'Mary Queen Of Scots'

You hear men lamenting the fact that their world is disrupted by the whims of two women who happen to be queens and hold the fate of their kingdoms — ironic in that the same issues revolve around male royals, but I digress. Saoirse Ronan gives a fine, spirited performance playing the ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots. She has a claim to the English throne, occupied by her cousin Elizabeth I, and she does everything Elizabeth doesn't do — she marries (several times), she bears a child, and that child is male. However, the whims of the males around her seal her fate. There are opulent costumes to be sure in this film, but the castles seem quite spare and true to the period. However, the cast and a heavy dose of sexual politics overshadows some of the real drama Mary faced before her demise. It's definitely worth the price of a ticket though. View Now
Gayle On Film: 'Roma'

Gayle On Film: 'Roma'

If anything, Alfonso Cuarón's ("Gravity," "Children of Men," "Y Tu Mama Tambien") very personal work "Roma" is a feast for the eyes. The cinematography is visually captivating. Shot in black and white, the film details the life of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), an indigenous woman working as a domestic servant. The story is revealed in a two-fold manner — in one way how a child would see the personal transactions in the home of a middle-class family in Mexico, and the other with the backdrop of social transformation. The film excels in using the complex political and personal politics that surround and sometimes swallow Cleo, but Marina De Tavira is stellar in her portrayal of Sofia, Cleo's employer struggling to raise her children and keep her marriage together in the presence of someone who is like family, but not family — simply put someone who is "other." You can expect to hear "Roma" read from a few Oscar cards. (This film has English subtitles). View Now
